OUR MISSION
Our Why
The journey to loving and accepting myself coincides with loving and accepting my hair as it is. The slow crawl from feeling the need for a relaxer or silk press to feel kempt and beautiful, to realizing I’m just as beautiful with a shrunken afro or a low haircut, has been a long and treacherous trek, by design. I believe Black hair is beautiful in every texture, curl pattern, length, and color. For Black people, hair is both “just hair” and a deep connection to our roots, which is why it has been villainized to the degree that it has. In a society that values uniformity, our hair will simply not comply, and that is its power. My mission is to honor and celebrate the beauty, resilience, and significance of Black hair, embracing it as a symbol of both individuality and cultural heritage.
What does this have to do with MKJS?
I feel in my spirit that Black people, both individually and collectively, can heal by learning to love and care for their hair. There is a common belief that Black hair, especially in its natural state, is difficult to manage unless you are a beautician. That is simply not true. With MKJS products and using my family as an example, I want to show my people that all our hair really wants is to be loved and accepted. And in the process of realizing that your hair is not “too much,” the deeper truth emerges, you, as a person, and we, as a people, are not “too much.”
